Through the Decade

56,509. And Counting.

56,509. There is an indisputable power a large number such as this one holds. For instance, if put into miles, you would be able to travel across the world a little over two times. If put into hours, it would span six years of your life. As for me, 56,509 represents the number of photos that I have taken in the past decade. It’s overwhelming to think what started as a single photograph taken on a small Nikon point-and-shoot camera in 2010 has turned into something that has become such a huge part of my identity.

In the beginning, it was a struggle to find my niche. It felt natural to start on the ocean as that is where I was raised. My goal was to capture an original perspective on natural elements in action, from the rolling waves in the setting of the summer sun to nostalgic summertime landmarks found abandoned come winter. I even chased storms along the coast with my camera covered in plastic wrap… yikes!

As much as I continue to love shooting in nature, I felt the need to go beyond it. There was this story I wanted to convey, but just didn’t know how to properly tell. I wanted to capture emotion in the most abstract way. Exhilaration in the purest form. A mystery that made you question everything before your eyes. The night I ventured out to capture this feeling, my work as an automotive photographer was born. I still remember the bright headlights peering out of the fog along a black ocean. There was movement in such stillness. Depth in such simplicity. It was not only what I was trying to capture, but the story I was so badly trying to tell. It was The Emotion of Motion.

My work really started to take off in the springtime of 2015 when The Ford Motor Company published an article regarding my work in the My Ford magazine. Booked shoot after booked shoot I got better at my craft, falling absolutely in love with telling the story of man and machine. Configuring the number 56,509 was a simple calculation, really. I tend to save every photo I take and every memory card I use. With one photograph came another, and another, and thousands more …with thousands more to come.

The year 2020 represents 10 years in photography, and through the incredible help of Saal Digital TM they were able to take my vision over the past decade and turn it into a physical form in the most beautiful way. Utilizing their help I was able to create two photo books that I have uploaded on this page, showcasing my passion and what I believe to be my best work over the years. My visual collection in Part I showcases my automotive photography while Part II goes back to my roots showcasing my natural photography.

Over the past decade, it has been one of the most fulfilling challenges to take what I see in my mind and capture it in the form of photography. I appreciate everyone who has shown their love and thank you all for the incredible support along the way. 10 years may seem like a long time, but it’s only just beginning.

Here is to 56,509… and counting.
